"That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" - The Smith's

Ever tried to write a "it wasn't too bad but NOT good" Race Recap/report before?!

A lot of typing mixed with a lot of deleting.

Was completely freaked after Race Packet pick-up when I saw my number was "911"
Yep,  9 - 1 - 1.

Like 9-11 [twin towers]
Like "911, what is your emergency?"

Reminded me of this: 911 is a joke - Public Enemy [flavor Flav].

I was happy when the Pita & Laurie reminded me of this song.

"Fire Burning" - Sean Kingston  . . . . . "someone call 911! . . .Shawty [Emz]fire burning on the dance floor whoa!"

Truth be told.  I was not liking this.

I. am. not. superstitious. [ha]

Thanks to all of you who sent kind words through email and in comments.  greatly appreciated.

I did stumble upon this this morning [a la Jason] :
"stotanism"
The definition, according to Mr Burfoot[author of the book he was reviewing], is that stotanism is about toughness, though it doesn't imply an insensitive, superman [I'll add super WO-man] approach. The stotan must be willing to stand on his[her] own, to resist pain, to stick to his[her] ideals. A stotan is quietly self-sufficient. He/she accepts the challenges of training, injuries, races, and disappointments without complaining, because [s]he understands that simply by keeping on, by sticking to the path [s]he has chosen, [s]he will get stronger and better.

* * * * * That last part: * * * * *

[s]he accepts the challenges of training, injuries, races, and disappointments without complaining, because he understands that simply by keeping on, by sticking to the path he has chosen, [s]he will get stronger and better

And.
I AM going to add "faster".

Because.
I.
want.
to. ;)

So that being said . . . . . .

 . . . . .  .I am hard on myself.

I expect a-freaking lot of myself.
I can do better than I did.
I have done better than I did.
No question about it.....I'll get that PR.

Real. Race Report tomorrow.  And trust you-me . . . It's a doozy.
Once you add in all the gooey/painful/gory/gross details.

Emz official time was 10 minutes slower than I hoped but 10 minutes faster than last year.

3:26:14

Yes.
There.
were.
tears.

BUT . . . .

[they were at the hotel. when I was alone]
on a positive note . . . . I didn't throw toss [lightly] my medal into the dirt/grass this time.  yay me.

Got to enjoy being with my friends and family at the finish line. Smelly hugs, salty kisses and a whole lotta [black] RUN EMZ shirts blazing in the AZ sun.
Trying to dance [while experiencing flipping bad cramps] to the "cupid shuffle" with the Pita [pretending he didn't know me].  awesome.

I have the most amazing support group [cheerleaders] any person could dream of having.

I.
Am.
Blessed.

AND

I AM getting that PR in January.

Not that it helps, but most people would KILL for that time....and your abs......just sayin. You are blessed, beautiful and fast, you will get that PR =)

I predict a smashing of the PR in Jan! Great job Emz, I like what mooshy said, this race was just a warm up for Jan.

I actually love the 911 Bib... I love Bibs that mean anything!

I hear "911 what your emergency?"
Tonya Harding: "He frew me on the grooound!"

and about 9 other calls by Tonya Harding...

I am not going to say "hey EMZ, I'd sure be happy with that time" or "Hyuck, that's a pretty good race no matter what." I am just going to say:

Whatevs dude, you know what you gotta do, and you'll get there, if emotions are how you 'vent' at the end of a race, then so be it. EMZ would not be EMZ without some emotions.

Carry on, EMZ... you inspire us more than you know.

Carry On, Manowar

Now we're all together
Let's sing our fighting song
One hundred thousand riders
We can't all be wrong
Comin' at us no stopping
Always Carry On

TTYL dude...

I am sensing a Pukie coming in this race report

Congrats on the race, you are a legend in my books

You did awesome! Love you parents in the RUN EMZ shirts! You look hot as always! :)

That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore but that song is. I used to listen to that than things where way worse than a 3:23 marathon. Remember 99.9999% of the population DIDN'T run 26.2 yesterday at any speed.

10 mins over last year is freaking awesome! Congrats!

Just know that while you are being super hard on yourself (and that is your GOD GIVEN RIGHT) we are all here thinking you are awesome.

awesome.

And fantastic support crews are the best!

Emz said...

Neil - I know you said you are not a "checker...backer" that you are a comment then leave kind of dude but . . . . . your comment . . . .

thank you.

ShutUpandRun said...

Yes you are getting that PR in Jan.

Can't wait for the full report.

Unknown said...

I second Beth's entire comment - especially the abs part...

Anyhoo - 911.. really. I mean thank God for that Sean Kingston song because it takes the edge off but 911. OMG. It's kinda funny. But still.

GREAT TIME, way to go, can't wait for the recap.

oh emz. i understand more than you could ever imagine about being too hard on yourself. you did awesome! my benchmark is 3:30. anything under that is AWESOME!!
i'm sorry i didn't make the race. the stitches are still in my knee and i knew would just open up that darn cut again.
you keep your chin up, chica and know there are a ton of peeps who appreciate you. xo

Jen Feeny said...

Man oh man missy I can't NOT WAIT to hear all the deets! Congrats!!!

Jason said...

And with this you have been inducted into the STOTAN MACHINE crew. We are few, we are proud, we are emotional, we are strong, we surivive and overcome, we fall and get back up....

WE ARE STOTAN!!!!!

The Boring Runner said...

Bummerrrrrrrrr. Having a great cheering squad makes it all worth it though.

See also my last comment on BQ'ing like a man. We ARE doing it in 2011. Mark your calendar.

Emz said...

Jason- WE ARE STOTAN!!!!! hugest. smile. ever. [and it was even a real smile]. Do stotan's have abs & arm sleeves? joking. joking. have to try and pretend I like myself today. ;)

Jason said...

HellZ Yes....

Abs to help scare off the other crews that try to mess with us.

Sleeves as body armor.

When we step to the starting line we are entering onto a field of battle that we will win on regardless of outcome b/c we will take away lessons and live to fight (run) anoher day.

WE ARE STOTAN!!!!!

Emz said...

are you a "coach" or something? ;) well, said, coach, well said. Can I be JUAN-ita?

Karine said...

It was a great race! Tears are OK, embrace your emotion. It is part of the gift that makes you who you are! 3:10 was the goal for 2011----remember?

Pita wore the shirt...isn't that a remarkable achievement by itself?

And I'm just saying: It's pretty cool when your cheerleaders are having their pictures taken and spectators are asking:"You know Emz?"

Melissa Cunningham said...

ok,i third what beth says!
and i TOTALLY understand where you are coming from. i have the same mind set. my 1/2 yesterday, although i finished it,was my slowest 1/2 ever, even counting the 2 i did when pregnant!!...now granted my baby is only 4 months old now,and i only "trained" for maybe a few weeks consistantly, but still...i felt totally and utterlly defeated...
so just hang in there, you may think you are only as good as your next race, but you are still friggin awesome to the rest of us!
cant wait to read the recap!!

Katie said...

Congrats EMZ, you are a HUGE inspiration to me!!

Julie @ HotlegsRunner said...

Great job Emz. I look forward to the day I can say I ran a sub 3:30 but didn't quite go as fast as I wanted to go. You are an inspiration to many.

As far as I am concerned, you were the overall WINNER

Mandi Runs said...

EMZ you inspire me!! ♥ You will get that PR!!

Angie said...

Yeah you are! And I'll get mine in February because you inspire me.

Sarah said...

Good job! Can't wait to hear the details. :-D

TMB @ RACING WITH BABES said...

So it sucks you didn't hit your goal time. But, I know you'll get it done in January.

With that said, if you ever want to "borrow" my bib and run a 3:26, feel free.

XLMIC said...

That PR is definitely on it's way for you! 3:26 ain't nothing to shake a stick at, but I totally get the disappointment that you landed on. Been there, too.

And the bib number... if you had the same birthday as my dad (sept 11), you'd have thought is was super cool ;-) Doesn't have to mean doom and gloom, ya know?

Laurie said...

I have to admit, I looked up your time yesterday because I couldn't wait until today to find out how you did. I knew you'd be disappointed but I still think you were smoking! And those RUN EMZ shirts... awesome!! Even Pita is sporting one.

Also, your mom always says the nicest things... I can see where you get it. Can't wait to read the full report and also find out how badly you smash your PR next month!

Kathy said...

YOU are A-FREAKING MAZING!! Way to keep that positive tude, you can do it, we know you can, and you absolutely will. Congrats!! You are an inspiration :)

I agree with Jamoosh--this was just a long run on your way to your BIG PR in Jan. Not to mention that I'm quite sure I, and many others, would probably love to have the time you turned in this weekend!

Kovas - It's "too late" my "double vision" got the best of me. I was "hot blooded" and my "blue morning [turned into a] blue day". But I'll be fighting "tooth & nail" for that PR in PHOENIX!

KovasP said...

Well, hopefully you're on the 3:10 to Yuma

Congrats lady! I look forward to reading the full report :)
I got my t-shirt in the mail while I was in KC over the weekend so didn't get to open it until today or I would have worn it to send you luck!
Thanks so much for it...IT ROCKS!! Just like you :)

Unknown said...

I TOTALLY get it! NYC was like that for me...gotta seem happy with what I did but it wasn't what really would make me HAPPY. So, we buckle down and keep pressing on, you'll DO IT. You know you will!

the Run EMZ shirts are simply awesome, haha Love the parody of Run DMC =) And awesome job on the marathon! You are insanely fast!

Lee said...

Hey Emz,
Sorry you didn't get what you wanted, still freakin' amazing in my books!

Kelly Leigh said...

I would totally be superstitious about that too! I never was until the week before our wedding and a black cat crossed our path.... Now I'm a superstition convert. You are definitely way too hard on yourself. Is that your mom and dad!? They look so cute and proud in their Run Emz shirts!

Happy Feet 26.2 said...

Damn! I can totally copy and paste most of your race report. I am HARD on myself. My time was 11 min. slower than I wanted. Yes, I can do better too.

We WILL do better EMZ because we WILL NOT GIVE UP!

My next attempt will be in March.

Your time was great, but I TOTALLY, 100% understand your feelings. I feel EXACTLY the same.

Detroit Runner(Jeff) said...

I'd be pumped with that time! The number, no so happy but hey you rolled with it!

Ruth said...

Did you know you made the newspaper in Tucson today? So proud!

First of all 3:26 is AWESOME! That is so fast...really!!

Secondly, the picture of you with your parents in the Run EMZ shirts is awesome!!

Johann said...

I can relate to your feelings, but on a different level. You are one awesome runner! Not many people will be hard on themselves after a 3:26 marathon. Well done, that is excellent! I would see this as a next step towards that goal. Rest well!

Bring it January.

The Green Girl said...

Wow, girl. I got out of breath reading this. If anyone is going to rock it in January, it's you, girl.

Amanda@runninghood said...

OMG, you are awesome! I had no clue...I've just been enjoying your blog but didn't really know your running times. Wow, you rock. Not to mention that you are a rock...nice abs lady! :) I can related to those feelings of frustration at wanting to reach a certain goal and not being quite there yet. This was so worth getting on the blogosphere for a few min today. You are inspirational.

Silly Girl Running said...

You wil get that PR! No doubt in my mind!

And your support group: amazing! Cherish them! They deserve a statue. Honestly. :)

Hi Emz
The same thing just happend to me 2 months ago I ran the Dublin Marathon to beat my previous time of 3.15 and ended up walking in places and finishing in a time of 3.45.It was hard to swallow to be honest. I started to knuckle down and completed a way harder course in 3.19 on Sat last and feel great.Hope it goes well for you in Jan.

Emz said...

Rob. Thanks for that comment. Makes me happy. Glad your race went so well!!!

Jen said...

Dude!! You freakin' rock!! LOVE the shirts!
