Treadmill Thursday's

Okay, so for as much time as I spend running on this revolving plastic/rubber thing . . . I figure I might as well include a once weekly, monthly, when ever I get around to it post about how to change "it" up / make it fun -[er] / how I keep from slitting my wrists each day I hop on "Ed".

Yes, I insist that my treadmill has a name. It MUST be a man name - and since I lack a creative side his name is "Ed".  Not Mr. Ed

      --- just good ol' Ed.

So starting next Thursday, I will start "Treadmill Thursday's".

I receive quite a few emails from fellow bloggers about my training [marathon training specifically] on a treadmill
Through this weekly post, I hope to:

*address these questions
*include ways to keep treadmill workouts from being [too] boring.
*discuss why I think this is a great mental toughness tool
*settings [what little tweaks to incline can do]

I am determined to show you [my fellow runners and not yet runners alike] that "Ed"ing it is fun.  And ------ wait for it ----- wait for it ----- may actually help you on your path to fitness or [gasp] reach your PR goal.

Got questions?  Sweet.  [but make sure they are nice] ;)

Um, what the Chinese guy said...

Hence, I will obtain a PR by never stepping foot on a treadmill!

Dude. I love my treadmill. Although we haven't had a date all summer. I am planning on changing that with a 16 miler tonight though ...

So I want to know, how do you pick your pace on the treadmill? Do you switch it up during a run or just coast at one speed?

2 of my 3 runs per week are on the dreadmill and I've actually gotten used to it. A 6 or 7 mile run goes by relatively quickly (and I'm a SLOW runner) but I have yet to hit double digits on it. I especially like it for intervals bc I'm not checking my watch every other second to stay on pace. Looking forward to Treadmill Thursdays!

Sounds like a great idea! I know I am fascinated by the miles you put in on your treadmill and the INCREDIBLE road racing times you have achieved!

Good idea. I'll read this even though I never run on a treadmill. I find it fascinating how many miles people can do on the things.

Now that I've moved to an apartment complex with a workout room, I'm just now starting treadmill running so this makes me uber excited!! :]

Now I've joined a gym I am actually looking forward to doing some - at least some! - of my nasty winter workouts on a treadmill. Are your abs the results of a treadmill? Do I bang on about your abs? Am I jealous?

Great idea! I've never ran on a treadmill, but since starting running a few months ago, I've never had to deal with winter/snow runs. So I'm sure I'll be running on the treadmills at the gym. Can't wait to hear your tips!

i have a love/hate relationship with the treadmill. I know it makes me faster and it's great for winter training, but some days it's SO my 'dreadmill'!;-0

sounds like good posts! I haven't been on a treadmill in ages, mostly because mine is sitting in about 50 pieces while my husband 'fixes' it...he's been 'fixing' it for months now!

I run a lot on a treadmill. Just a fact of life. One topic that might be interesting is treadmill maintenance. DO you have yours serviced? How much does it cost? How often? Can you tell a difference pre and post service?

I haven had mine serviced in years, but I run mostly at the gym.

the treadmills and i have a hate hate relationship. At least its mutual right?

I have broken all but two treadmills I have ever used... I have used a lot.

I think I need a heavy duty treadmill or something.

Don't you like exploring nature and the wonders of the earth and your surroundings? That is why I love running, I escape all of life and I feel like its just me and God's creations (not getting sappy here... just saying). That is why I LOVE running outside.

I will be interested in your weekly updates so I can try to understand the logic :)

Keep up the great work!

I've been doing a lot of runs on the treadmill lately because it's sooooo hot in southen Alabama AND I work night shift so on my days off I don't get up until noon or later. I look foward to seeing your workout progress!!

i used to do a lot more treadmill running and it can definitely help with speed work or force me to do hills since they don't exist in florida

Oooh! I'm excited for these posts! I definitely run more than I ever want on the treadmill. I like that you named your treadmill too. I might have to do that.

I also learned at running camp that training on a treadmill is just as good as training outside! It's true. Scientific research has shown that a runner who trained solely on the road didn't have any additional advantages as compared to the runner who trained solely on a treadmill. That was new to me. The trick is you have to manipulate the treadmill to match road conditions.

@Matty, you and other guys may have the same problem my husband has with treadmills? He is a 180 pound running machine and had a hard time finding a treadmill that could carry his weight and his speed (5:20 mile pace) without "skipping" on him so we had to invest in heavy duty treadmill (smooth fitness 7.35). Of course he hardly ever runs on a treadmill either--just sayin if your interested in a good treadmill.

Thanks EMZ, excited for these!

Pass the ketchup because I am eating my words!!!

I've been running on a treadmill the past couple of weeks for my midweek runs because it's SO. UNBELIEVEABLY. FREAKING. INSANELY. HOT!!!!! in Tennessee right now.

I'm trying to like it. I really am.

Ooh! Ohh! I have a question!!! I'm running a very hilly marathon in October and I live in totally flat New Orleans...can you help me learn hills on a treadmill?

Molly said...

I read in the Q&A section of this months Runners World, about how if you do the majority of your marathon training on a treadmill, your legs are really going to feel it race day. How true do you think that is??? I do all my long runs outside, but the rest is mostly treadmill. Am I screwed?

ajh said...

I'm sure this has been asked.....but the boredom factor???

Angie said...

Totally planning on doing my hill training on a treadmill next month. That's totally legit, yes?

Angie said...

'Cause you know, I live in Kansas.

Char said...

I'm amazed that anyone can run for any length of time on a treadmill - let alone train for a marathon on one. I've got either a low boredom threshold or ADD especially when I know I can turn off the machine and the run will be over. I'm much better when I have to run just to get back home.
